Dimetrodon (pronounced die-MET-roh-don) means “two measures of teeth,” referring to its distinctive dentition. Unlike many reptiles, Dimetrodon had two different types of teeth—sharp canine-like teeth and shearing teeth. This differentiation of teeth is known as heterodonty.
Dimetrodon featured a large dorsal sail, which may have played a role in thermoregulation. The sail's extensive surface area may have helped the animal warm up or cool down more efficiently.
Although it looked somewhat reptile-like, Dimetrodon was not a dinosaur. It was a pelycosaur and an early synapsid, part of the lineage that eventually gave rise to mammals.
