Mountain Lion Paw Track Plaster Cast — Adirondacks, 1940
This vintage plaster cast is reportedly taken from a mountain lion (puma/cougar) track discovered in the Adirondack region of New York in 1940.
The track is particularly interesting from a wildlife-history perspective because it dates to a period when the presence of mountain lions in the Adirondacks was highly disputed. The native Eastern Puma population was considered extirpated from New York by the early 20th century, yet reports of mountain lions continued to surface periodically throughout the Northeast.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service later concluded that the Eastern Puma was extinct throughout its historical range in the eastern United States, while acknowledging that occasional reports continued. Consequently, the historical identification and origin of individual tracks and sightings from this period can be difficult to verify.
