About Megalonyx jeffersonii

Also known as Jefferson's Ground Sloth, Megalonyx jeffersonii is the official State Fossil of West Virginia.

In 1797, saltpeter miners discovered large fossil bones in a cave in Monroe County, West Virginia, and sent them to President Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson initially believed they belonged to a giant prehistoric cat. In 1799, anatomist Caspar Wistar correctly identified the remains as those of a previously unknown extinct giant ground sloth and named the species in Jefferson's honor.

Radiocarbon dating has since shown these fossils to be more than 38,000 years old.

Megalonyx jeffersonii was officially designated the State Fossil of West Virginia in March 2008.
